Get Electrically Stimulated with a TENS unit
 
 
While the idea of electrical stimulation of nerves and muscles for pain relief may seem like a more modern invention, the practice of using electrical therapies for this purpose has been around for quite some time.  Scribonius Largus, who was a court physician to the Roman Emperor Claudius around 50 AD, discovered that pain was relieved by standing on an electrical fish at the seashore.  Various electrostatic devices were used during the 16th through the 18th century to treat headaches and other pains, and not surprisingly, Benjamin Franklin thought very highly of these kinds of methods.  A device called the "Electreat" was invented in the 19th century, along with many other kinds of electrical products for pain control and cures for disease.  The Electreat survived into the 20th century, but it had limitations with control of the stimulus and of course, was not portable.

TENS, which stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation was first introduced in the 1970's.  This TENS unit was the first of its design to be portable and patient-wearable.  It was originally intended for the testing of electrical stimulation tolerance in chronic pain patients before implantation of electrodes in the spinal cord dorsal column.  So many of the patients got so much relief from the TENS unit itself that they never returned for the implant!  After this unexpected success, several companies began manufacturing TENS units and found even more applications for this device, such as helping epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and other disorders of the nervous system.

While EMS devices (Electronic Muscle Stimulation) and TENS units both use electrical stimulation and look very similar, they have different purposes; EMS is for stimulating muscles, and TENS is for blocking pain, specifically by stimulating nerves.  Some of these electrical devices actually combine both EMS and TENS therapies in one unit, making the combination product the best choice for people who need or want both therapies.

A wonderful example of combining both EMS and TENS is the Sys Stim 206 Muscle Stimulator available from Rehabmart.
