According to the CDC's latest figures, one in 88 children have autism spectrum disorders. Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are classified as a developmental disability that impacts a person's ability to communicate, interact socially, and sensory perception. The characteristics of the conditions impact those who live with it in varying degrees, ranging from the pervasive social awkwardness in people with Asperger's syndrome to full-blown classical autism.

While the majority of people living with ASDs are of average and above intelligence, the challenges of functioning in the world involve the ability to interact appropriately in varying degrees. Symptoms in early childhood include significant delays in language development, repetitive motor activity such as hand flapping or rocking, little or no eye contact, lack of interest in peer relationships, and a fixation on parts of objects such as a toy's gears or a doll's arm rather than the entire object. Children on the Asperger's end of the spectrum may have perfectly normal eye contact and speech development, but have problems with discerning social cues.

The key to supporting a person living with an ASD is early diagnosis and intervention both on the medical and educational fronts. The sooner this happens, the earlier treatment and individual educational plans can be brought into play, leading to a better outcome for the child.

Also utilizing verbal interaction for anyone dealing with limited speech are the Put 'Em Arounds. They may be mounted on the walls as well as lap boards and tabletops. They record and replay 20-second messages that initiate active communication with teachers, peers, and family, letting the needs of the user be known clearly and directly.

The Choice 4 Communicator may look like a game, but it helps the user make the connection between an object and pictures and icons representing it. The user may work in up to four fields to identify an object by pushing a button which activates a bright light and gives an auditory cue when correct. The Communicator includes icons, photos and objects and will record up to five minutes of audio cues.

To help develop the skills needed in interacting with peers and caregivers alike, there's nothing like a game of Tic Tac Toe, especially one played on a board that lights up and plays music when a player makes the winning combination. It includes two input ports to accommodate capability switches.

Another perceptual difficulty involves awareness and understanding of time. The Time Timer is 12 inches square and features a bright red wedge to give a user a visual cue to help him or her comprehend how long he or she has to complete a task or school assignment.

Stress and anxiety are two more issues that pervade life on the ASD. To promote relaxation, there are the Vibrating Pillow and Tubular Vibrator. Both provide tactile stimulation and can accommodate capability switches.

The components of the Visual Stimulation Kit are also appropriate for use by people challenged by a variety of sensory processing disorders. Whether used at home, in a special needs classroom, or a therapy center, the Autism Spectrum Disorder Visual Stimulation Kit will help people with ASD develop the skills they need to interact with their surroundings, giving them a chance at a happier and more fulfilling life.
