Prevent an Uncontrolled Fall with a Wheelchair Ramp

Walking is an incredible feat.  The coordination of different muscle groups on different planes of the body combined with pressure feeling on the soles of the feet to help keep the mass centered and moving forward at the same time.  Add the brains ability to coordinate all the thousands of different stimuli at any giving moment combined with the delicate vestibular system of the inner ear so the body knows where it is in related to gravity and the earth.

Basically, walking is a controlled fall.

Adding to the dimension of difficulty is walking up a curb or some stairs.  And yet, most people have no trouble walking up curbs or steps.  Need to walk across the street and up the curb, no problem, need to step up a few stairs to get into the house, no problem.  Heck, even a two year old toddler can walk up a few steps and get onto the front porch.

For a person in a wheelchair, a two year old can get around better then they can.  Imagine how it must feel to follow a two year old grandchild into the house, only to stop at the bottom step and to be able to go no further.  Sure, some people in wheelchairs are pretty good at climbing curbs or even a few steps, but for many who would try this, more often than not it could turn into an uncontrolled fall.

This is why wheelchair ramps are so important.  A little thing as a six inch step can stop a wheelchair bound person right in their tracks.  Wheelchair ramps are important in a home where a person who uses a wheelchair live, in stores and businesses, public facilities, and even to carry in the car for those times when one is needed.  Rehabmart offers a number of different types of wheelchair ramps and the following are just a sample of what we have.

From library.rehabmart.com    The Self Supporting Adjustable Threshold Ramp is designed to assist a smooth transaction between two different levels of floor at a doorway and can accommodate both wheelchairs and scooters with various wheel configurations.  This ramp is designed for doorways that swing either in or out and has adjustable risers to fit a wide range of threshold levels.  This ramp is made with durable welded construction of slip resistant grooved aluminum and will align directly against the door threshold.

From library.rehabmart.com    The Rubber Threshold Ramp is another threshold ramp but is made out of 100% recycled tires.  This slip resistant threshold ramp is ideal for both indoor and outdoor surfaces and provides a safe and smooth ground-to-sill transition.  This is also great for sliding glass doors because it doesn't interfere with the door track.  It is easily installed and can simply be trimmed for lower heights and widths.

The EZ-ACCESS Suitcase Advantage Series Wheelchair Ramp is just what the name suggests; it can be separated into two lightweight sections therefore making it perfect for transportation and set-up.  Due to the unique self-adjusting bottom transition plate, this ramp makes a smooth ramp-to-ground transfer and provides a great flexibility for various ramp angles, able to ramp over curbs, steps, and even into a mini-van or pick-up truck.  The welded aircraft-grade aluminum is ultra-strong while remaining light and portable.

From library.rehabmart.com    Simply removing two hinge pins, the ramp can be separated into two lightweight sections, each with their own ergonomically designed handle for easy use, carry, and storage.  The ramp also has high quality non-skid tape, is 29 ½ inches wide when unfolded and has an 800 weight capacity.

From library.rehabmart.com    The PVI Van Ramp are important for wheelchair/scooter bound people for travel, accommodating wheelchairs and scooters with various wheel configurations.  This ramp has easy installation for both a side door or rear door van.  With it's durable welded construction anti-slip and high traction surface, this ramp can be folded in quarters and stored vertically in the van, leaving the doorway accessible, or be mounted to the floor in the rear of the van and be manually operated by one person with a spring assist.

From library.rehabmart.com    Lastly, the PVI TrekAway MT1400 Platform Lift is more of a lift-ramp.  Made with steel framework to provide extra weight capacity and stability and a aluminum platform provides which weight savings and corrosion resistance, all combined, this welded construction gives superior strength versus riveted options.  This hitch mounted carrier brings versatility and innovation together into one platform lift.  This can be used with Class III and Class IV hitches and has a loading capacity of 350 pounds for either, scooters, wheelchairs, or other types of powerchairs.

The dual power option gives the ability to choose between power sources of either a removable, quick change lithium battery or having it hardwired to the vehicle battery.  It is also key operated for added security, has a simple up and down toggle switch for operation, and a built-in premium retractable straps for secondary scooter or chair. (See video below)

Wheelchair ramps can help and simplify the lives of many wheelchair bound people and caretakers.  No more assisting a wheelchair person by grabbing the handles and bouncing them backwards up steps or no more balancing acts by the wheelchair person themselves, trying to get over curbs or steps.  A ramp is something that most people don't think about, unless you are the person in the wheelchair, sitting there...just sitting there while looking at some steps.
