Super Duper Scooters

A motorized wheelchair by any other name is a scooter...sort of.  Actually, a scooter is classified as a "mobility aid equivalent to a wheelchair but configured like a motor scooter. It is often referred to as a power-operated vehicle/scooter or electric scooter as well."  Scooter is also a popular name for pets.  I have known several pet 'Scooters' over the years but not one of them was ever power-operated.

The type of scooters that Rehabmart offers have a tiller, or steering column, with forward and reverse directions and speed controls that can be controlled by thumb paddles, finger controls, or a switch.  There are basically two types of mobility scooters; a front-wheel drive or a rear-wheel drive.  The front wheel drive is usually the smaller of the two and is best used indoors and has a lesser weight capacity of generally upwards to 250 pounds.  The rear-wheeled drive scooter can be used for both indoors and outdoors, has a larger turn-ratio and can carry a rider weighing up to 350 pounds or more.

Scooters are useful for people who may have difficulty with using a manual wheelchair.  This would include people who are without arm/shoulder gross movement or strength, people who tire out quickly, or who do not have the stamina necessary to propel themselves manually.  Although using a scooter still requires upright posture and some upper body mobility and strength, using a scooter is very helpful for people with whole-body conditions such as coronary or lung issues, particular types of arthritis, obesity or other ailments which may prevent them from using a wheelchair.

Rehabmart carries a number of scooters to choose from and the following are only a small sampling of the different types of scooters offered by Rehabmart.

TheDrive Falcon 3 3-Wheel Scooter is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.  The 22.5 inch turning radius of the Falcon 3 makes it great for the tight fitting interior of the home or business while the convenient and compact design makes assembly and dis-assembly easy to transport the scooter in a car or van.

The Falcon 3 easily removable battery can be charged separately from the scooter, saving the inconvenience of making a 'parking area' near an outlet.  This scooter is built for comfort with a height adjustable seat; flip back, adjustable width arms and a basket on the front for carrying personal stuff.  With a protected, thumb style throttle located on the handle, anti-tippers, flat-free tires, a dual LED head and tail light for safety, and a cruising speed of four mph, the Falcon 3 is also a safe and reliable scooter that can be ridden outside, or in a mall while shopping.

The Zip'r 4 Leisure Travel Scooter by Zipr Mobility is a popular lightweight, full featured travel scooter.  One reason for the popularity of the Zip'r 4 is that it weighs only 29 pounds and can be assembled in less than 20 seconds - just drop in the battery and get boot-scooting boogieing!

This is a stable four wheel scooter that has a full body shroud in either red or blue and flat-free, non-marking foam filled tires.   The 250 pound weight capacity, the adjustable rotating seat, and the headlight to use in darkened travel make the Zip'r 4 a great piece of transportation machinery.

The Spitfire 1420 EX Travel Scooter, from the ActiveCare popular Spitfire EX Series of 4-wheel Mini Mobility scooters can now change the look of the scooter to match your mood or wardrobe.  Each scooter comes with three sets of panels in the colors of red, blue, or silver.

The Daytona 4 GT 4-Wheel Standard Size Mobility Scooter can speed up to 5 mph and has a cruising range of 20 miles.  This 300 pound weight capacity scooter has a contoured swivel seat that is both height and back adjustable and also features a flip back and adjustable width arms.

The Daytona 4 is also easy to assemble and disassemble for auto transport and comes with easy to remove batteries.  The "finger-pull" throttle, flat free tires, headlight, anti tippers, and large carry basket makes this scooter a real good way to get around both in the house, or out and about in the neighborhood.

Lastly, we have the Prowler Series 4-Wheel Mid-Size Scooter that can go just about anywhere...in style.  There comes a time in one's life when they seek out ease and comfort, the finer things in life, and this scooter can deliver.  With the new ergonomic handle and controller, the scooter handling is a breeze.

With the 360-degree swivel Captain's Chair with headrest, infinitely adjustable tiller, ergonomic design and full front and rear wheel suspension, the Prowler travels with class, style and comfort.  With the 23 mile travel range and top speed of 7 mph, the driver can travel far and fast in style, going just about anywhere he or she would like to go, combined with the 500 pound weight capacity, the anti-tip pneumatic tires, front and rear wheel suspension, and the safety package which includes lights, horn, turn signals, mirrors and hand brake will make this scooter give years of dependable service and safe travel.

Scooters are not just a kid's project of a few pieces of wood and roller skate wheels nailed together for a quick and dangerous trip down the driveway or along the sidewalk, but are instead high tech, dependable machines that assist people, both young and old, to travel and feel more independent.  If a person has trouble walking and can't wait for the world to come to them, a scooter can help the same person go out and experience the world that is now open and waiting for them.
