Walk-in bathtubs can make bathing easier and safer for the elderly and those with physical conditions that make getting in and out of standard bathtubs difficult.  Instead of having to sit and stand in a small tub, walk-in bathtubs require only a small step over the lip and the ability to sit at about a normal height.  Rehabmart offers several walk-in bathtubs that can help many people regain some independence in the bathroom, including the Supreme Walk-in Bathtub and the Access Walk-in Bathtub.

The Supreme Walk-In Bathtub is a large tub designed to aid users in bathing independently. It can be installed over an existing bathtub or shower stall.  It has a handheld showerhead and optional hydrotherapy jets.  There are three kinds of jets: a water jet hydrotherapy system that offers variable speed controls and an in-line heater for the water jet system; an air jet whirlpool system that has a self-cleaning purge system and quiet variable speed heated blower; and the dual massage system that offers a combination of air and water jets.

Some of the advantages of the Supreme Walk-in Bathtub are that it has an overflow protective drain, slip-resistant tub floor and stainless steel frame.  It is available in both right hand and left hand versions and is twice the depth of regular tubs.  The Supreme Walk-in Bathtub measures 35 inches wide by 55 inches long and 40 inches high.  It is made with triple gel-coated fiberglass and is available in white or soft cream. This product fits standard plumbing and should be installed by a professional. Most installations are completed in one day.

The Access Walk-In Bathtub has one of the largest door openings on the market to allow ease of entry for anyone, including patients who are transferred in with lifts.  The clearance under the tub allows a lift to be maneuvered easily. A hydrotherapy spa package also is available.  The tub measures 52 inches long by 32 inches wide and 40 inches high.  It has a 37.5 inch long door that swings outward.  The device has a contoured seat and a grab bar that is installed on the opposite side of the tub as well as stainless steel leveling legs that can be adjusted by up to two inches per leg.

For the elderly and the disabled, normal bathing comes with a real fear of falling.  More than 4.6 million bathroom injuries are reported each year.  And more than 11 million senior citizens fall each year, which equals one of every three people older than 65.  Treatment of the injuries and complications associated with falls cost the United States more than $20.2 billion annually.  In addition, falls are the leading cause of accidental death for the elderly and account for about half of all accidental deaths in the home.

Besides the safety aspects, using a bathtub can have increased therapeutic benefits over using a shower. Baths are especially helpful for people who have had hip replacement surgery, arthritis or knee problems along with those who have diabetes or sleeping problems.
