Celebrate Breastfeeding Awareness!

Even if you are not a nursing mother, supporting breastfeeding is everyone's responsibility.  The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is asking for renewed commitment from all sectors of society to create supportive environments for breastfeeding, including in work sites, public transportation, parks, health centers and other places outside the home where mothers of young children carry out their daily lives.  This call for action is in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week 2011, and awareness campaigns continue all through the month of August.

According to the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (www.waba.org.my), the theme of this year's awareness campaign is "Talk to Me! Breastfeeding-a 3-D experience," and has the goal of bringing breastfeeding into the open, to talk about it with all members of society and to show that creating a supportive environment for breastfeeding is everyone's responsibility.

Breastfeeding is the single most effective preventive intervention for preventing deaths of children under 5, and research shows that about 20 percent of neonatal (under 1 month) deaths could be prevented if all newborns began breastfeeding during the first hour of life. In addition, children who are breastfed for seven to nine months have on average six points higher IQ than children who are breastfed for less than a month. Breastfeeding also helps mothers lose weight and reduces their risk of breast and ovarian cancer as well as type 2 diabetes.

Rehabmart encourages breastfeeding by offering some helpful supportive products for this highly important activity.  The Purely Yours Professional Breast Pump with Carry All contains everything the breastfeeding mother needs to feed her baby, no matter where she is.  Breast pumps assist the busy mother on the go with comfortably pumping her own milk whenever is convenient for her and then storing and keeping that milk cooled in the convenient tote bag.  The HygieniKit allows single or dual pumping and also helps prevent contaminants from entering the milk with its unique closed milk collection system.

Adjust the suction and cycle settings for your own comfort level and to simulate your own baby's nursing pattern, while also maximizing milk production.  This pump can be used with both AA batteries or an AC adapter, so you can use it wherever you go.  The stylish tote bag carries the pump, accessories and six 4 ounce bottles with tops.  Mother's milk stays cool in the Cool'N'Carry insulated part of the tote bag for 10 hours.  The pump may be removed from the tote, or operated inside of the tote bag for additional privacy if desired.

Rehabmart also offers Curity Nursing Pads which feature a very soft, non-irritating edge and moisture-proof  backing that keeps the pad in place.

These pads work great at catching excess milk leakage and can be worn inside both regular and nursing bras.  They also help to prevent bra friction and infection caused by irritated skin.

Breastfeeding is a normal, physiological process and should be encouraged in all sectors of our world.  Communication about breastfeeding awareness needs to transcend to all people of all ages in order to enlighten everyone about how much better breast milk is for an infant than any formula, and how much better this practice is for all of us as far as environmental factors and social progression.  And this means supporting breastfeeding moms all over our world with improved public facilities and safer, socially acceptable accommodations for moms and babies alike.  As PAHO Director, Dr. Mirta Roses said, "Breastfeeding is the safest, healthiest and most natural way to feed a baby, yet breastfeeding tends to be hidden in homes and outside of public view.  We need to reverse these trends by creating supportive environments for breastfeeding."
