The world of assistive technology has grown exponentially in recent years. Disabled computer users have a dizzying array of devices that cater specifically to their special needs. Everything from eye tracking technology to specially designed joysticks is available with a variety of settings and customization options. While it is great to have all these options to choose from, the amount of choices may be overwhelming to a beginner. Wouldn't it be nice to have all these choices figured out for you in one complete package? In an effort to simplify the choices available, Rehabmart offers the Computer Access Package. The Computer Access Package contains everything you need to equip your computer with the very latest in assistive technology, including a special keyboard, switches, trackballs, a joystick and the necessary interfaces to make them functional.
Easy to read Keyboard
For the child who has trouble distinguishing upper and lower case letters, MyBoard-LC has large, one inch keys that are color coded to help make it easy to tell the difference between number, function, vowel and consonant keys. The keys are also pressure sensitive so tiny fingers need not press hard to type.
Innovative Devices to Replace the Traditional Mouse
For computer users who cannot control a mouse because of difficulties with small motor functions and muscle control issues, the Wireless Wave Rollerball is an ideal solution. A large trackball replaces the traditional mouse button and makes movement almost effortless for the user. Large color coded buttons are specially mounted slightly sub-flush to prevent unintentional activation and also allow the user to make left or right clicks and to engage a drag lock feature. The Wireless Wave Rollerball comes with two switch jacks to provide additional points of access for other devices.
Imagine a mouse that can be manipulated without moving your hand or wrist! With the CRUISE Trackpad, the user needs only to softly touch the control ring to manipulate the cursor on the computer screen. The Trackpad is ideal for those who have severe motor control issues who need a large, stable surface to work with. Users activate color coded buttons to determine right/left clicks, engage drag lock and double click options. The CRUISE Trackpad comes with two switch input jacks, is PC and Mac compatible and requires no additional drivers to install.
Computer gamers have known for years about the advantages of easy to manipulate joy sticks. The ROCK Joy stick provides all the advantages of a mouse but requires very little hand manipulation to control the cursor. Designed for use with either hand, the ROCK Joy stick features color coded customizable buttons for cursor movement and click control. The Joystick features three interchangeable handles to best suit the computer user's needs: a stem, T-bar and a large softball.
Switches and Switch Interfaces
Switch interfaces help simplify computer controls for users with motor impairments. One of the most well-known switches is the Jelly Bean Twist. The brightly colored Jelly Bean has a 2.5 inch surface which makes it easier to control computer functions for those who cannot work with smaller controls. The switch top can be replaced with any of the following colors to suit personal preferences or to accommodate specific vision impairments: red, blue, yellow or green. For those who need an even larger surface to work with, the Big Red Twist features a 5-inch surface for easy computer manipulation that requires very little pressure to activate.
The Hitch Computer Switch Interface is an easy and flexible interface that allows users to perform all keyboard and mouse functions by simply pressing a switch. To use the Hitch, simply plug it into a Mac or PC and immediately start to use five different sets of functions with as many as five switches at once. There is no special software to set up to begin to use the different rows of functions that can be chosen at the touch of a button such as down, left, right and enter.
An even easier switch interface to use is the Jelly Beamer Wireless Switch Transmitter and Receiver. The Jelly Beamer requires nothing to plug into the computer and will bring immediate switch access from up to 30 feet away. The Jelly Beamer features an external switch jack that will transform any switch into a wireless device and has unique codes to prevent interference with other devices.
No matter what your particular physical challenges may be, there is no reason to limit your computer access with all the advances in assistive technology available to consumers such as the ones listed above. Although increased computer access cannot take away the daily challenges facing those with disabilities, it can help individuals to take control of one aspect of their lives which can help them feel empowered and more independent. And, in the vast and sometimes overwhelming world of computers and technology, we could all use a little more confidence.
