The National Eye Institute started Healthy Vision Month in 2003 as a way to educate and inform people about the need for comprehensive vision exams which include dilation to screen for the early stages of glaucoma, macular degeneration, or impact from unchecked diabetes. None of those conditions show any signs of their presence until some fairly serious damage has been done.

While the focus is on preventative care for these conditions, other issues can also affect a person’s vision. Age related problems may include dry eyes, low vision, or cataracts. Trauma to the eye may cause a loss of sight as well. For anyone trying to prevent, or who is living with diminished eyesight for any reason, Rehabmart offers some products that may help.

The Pain Relief Mask with massaging ergo beads is made from a cotton and Lycra blend and filled with beads to give the area around the eyes a gentle massage, relieving dry or puffy eyes, post-surgical discomfort, and headaches. To enhance its effectiveness, pop it in the freezer. Cleaning is a snap--simply wash in cold water and air dry.

Whether people with low vision are at a sporting event, on a bird-watching trip, or at home working on a craft project, the Clear Lens Hands-Free Ophthalmic Binocularswill help them get a clearer view. Side mounted rotary wheels allow independent adjustment of each of the eyepieces to give each eye the greatest amount of vision clarity, and all the lenses are made of clear acrylic to provide the widest possible range of vision. They are worn just like a pair of glasses, freeing the hands for taking notes, applauding, and so on.

With the help of the ezRead Electronic Magnifier, people living with low vision are just seconds away from being able to read the mail, or a book, or look at pictures in full color. The ezRead’s 11-foot long cable is plugged into the video input jack available on most TV sets. Its internal LED’s provide bright lighting as the magnifier is moved over the page to ensure clear images. It includes an AC power adapter and requires three AAA batteries.

From library.rehabmart.comFor sheer versatility, consider the SmartView Versa Handheld Electronic Magnifier. Whether a user is reading the pesky small print on a label or watching TV, the autofocus feature adjusts the lenses to provide optimal clarity. It has a widescreen LCD display and provides high-contrast viewing of text in colors other than black. The Versa weighs in at a mere seven ounces, but magnifies from 5x to 15x. It can be used for crossword puzzles, reading, and watching TV. It comes with an AC power supply, a writing stand, a protective case and a carrying strap.

All of these items are suitable for use in private homes or eldercare centers.

While diminished vision doesn’t automatically mean diminished quality of life thanks to these items, it’s best to take preventative steps to avoid the development of conditions that could cause it. The NEI recommends eating foods rich in eye-enhancing nutrients such as leafy greens and carrots, wearing sunglasses, using eye protection to avoid injury, and maintaining a healthy weight to avoid developing diabetes. By following those suggestions and getting regular comprehensive eye exams, healthy vision can be yours for years to come.
