What do these numbers mean?
In terms of a person's health they mean good, not too bad, and not too good, or put another way they mean normal, prehypertension, and stage 1 high blood pressure.
May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month. The first thing to know is that everyone has blood pressure and it is very important to know what your blood pressure is, even when you are feeling fine. To know your blood pressure is to love your heart because unchecked high blood pressure over a period of time can damage your body in many ways. Some examples of what prolonged high blood pressure can lead to are coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and kidney failure.
'Blood pressure' is the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps the blood and it is measured in two different modes of pressure, the 'top' number is called the systolic pressure and the 'bottom' number is the diastolic pressure. "Systolic" refers to the blood pressure when the heart beats while pumping out the heart-blood and the "diastolic" refers to the blood pressure when the heart is at rest between the beats.
In the United States about one in three adults have high blood pressure and most do not even know it. There are ways, both pharmaceutical and natural, to control high blood pressure and reduce the risk of accomplying health problems. Some simple steps to take include seeing a medical professional for an ongoing treatment plan, to make sure to follow the plan even if you are feeling good, and to incorporate a healthy lifestyle of nutrition, exercise, and stress-free living. For more information on ways to know about your blood pressure and how to control it, go to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute website.
The following products from Rehabmart can also assist you in monitoring your blood pressure and to stay a step ahead of future illnesses.
The talking voice will let you know when the monitor is ready to use, then simply press a button and the auto-inflation arm cuff will start. When completed, the voice of the monitor will announce your blood pressure readings and pulse rate. If you don't want to hear the voice, you can turn it off and look at the outcome on a large backlit LCD. There are also colored LED lights which indicate normal, high-normal, or abnormal high blood pressure readings. This monitor also comes with an 8-reading memory with date/time reference and recall, scan, and average reading functions. This unit can use either an A/C adapter or 4 AA batteries. The oversized buttons are easy to locate and operate, and with the voice prompts, this blood pressure monitor is ideal for the blind and visually impaired.
