Elberton, GA (PRWEB)

Rehabmart.com, an online e-commerce company that sells rehabilitation and medical supplies, has recently joined into a distribution partnership with MonoMano Cycling, Incorporated, to offer their unique one-handed handlebar for adaptive cycling (Cycling Control System) to a wider consumer marketplace. The MonoMano company was born from an ingenious invention created by a team of students at the University of Rochester in New York. With their goal of promoting accessibility for people with disabilities, this five student team developed their unparalleled handlebar device as a senior-year design project under the guidance of professors Amy Lerner and Laurel Carney at the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Rochester.

This Cycling Control System device enables stroke survivors, amputees and other disabled users to shift gears, steer, and brake on a recumbent tricycle using only one hand. “The MonoMano system allows some people with disabilities to overcome a barrier they face on a daily basis,” said Sara Hutchinson, one of the student inventors. “It’s our hope that they can forget about their disability for a while and just enjoy the freedom of riding a cycle.” The five students, Sara Hutchinson, Martin Szeto, Jackson Block, Dominic Marino and David Narrow, have also received the prestigious Student of da Vinci Award for Accessibility and Universal Design for 2013.

"After seeing how meaningful the device was for stroke survivors," said Martin Szeto, “we decided to pursue the project after graduation.” The MonoMano Cycling company is the five’s brainchild, helping them to market this cutting edge control system, with goals to develop other affordable, adaptive technologies to assist individuals with unilateral weakness. They used the popular crowd-funding platform of Innovocracy to get their company off the ground and to further perfect the final version of their cycling control system.

Dedicated to developing innovative devices that allow users with single-sided disabilities and challenges to enjoy the world of cycling, MonoMano Cycling is an exciting new trendsetter in the field of adaptive sports and recreation.

“We are proud to introduce more consumers to the amazing new one-handed handlebar cycling control system from MonoMano Cycling,” said Hulet Smith, OTR/L, MBA and CEO of Rehabmart. “Specifically designed for upper extremity amputees, stroke survivors and anyone else who only has the use of one hand, this adapted tricycle handlebar can be attached to any recumbent trike with a U-shaped handlebar and horizontal support beam. Completely adjustable, this left- or right- handed device can easily accommodate both children and adults up to 76 inches in height, and can be purchased alone, with adaptable pedals or even as the complete trike. Unsurpassed in quality, durability, function and performance, we are thrilled to offer this exciting new handlebar innovation to our customers at Rehabmart.com.”
