It wasn’t that long ago that people living with issues that impacted their mobility wound up bedridden, on crutches, or had to use a bulky wheelchair that was hard to maneuver and in many cases was difficult to operate manually on one’s own. The newest generation in mobility devices, personal transporters and scooters, allow users to move around with more flexibility, comfort and speed than electric wheelchairs.  Their smaller size and lighter weight allow the users easier transport around their homes and in public areas such as stores, restaurants, and theaters, for example. Here are two innovative models carried by Rehabmart.

The Invacare Pronto Air Personal Transporter has a weight capacity of 250 pounds and can zip along at speeds up to four and a half miles an hour. The contoured seat is padded with memory foam to provide support to the user’s sitting area while relieving pressure on points that are vulnerable to sores. The ergonomic arm rests and adjustable back add to the comfort. Two caster wheels in the front and non-marking urethane tires in the rear let the user negotiate tight spaces and terrain such as level walking paths at parks with ease.  The Pronto Air’s electronic controls operate intuitively, allowing the user to change directions and speed smoothly. Two rechargeable batteries provide up to seventeen hours of power, giving the user plenty of time to browse at a shop, enjoy a day outdoors, or perhaps take in a movie without worries about getting stranded. The chair and the base can be easily taken apart and put back together, making it easy to transport in the trunk of a mid-sized or full-sized car or an SUV.  The Pronto Air highlights a sleek, chrome finish with black upholstery, and a choice of either an 18 or 20 inch deep seat.

Developed with the off-road adventurer in mind, the Osprey Heavy Duty Four Wheel Drive Scooter from Drive Medical offers features designed to tackle rough trails and uneven terrain while keeping its wheel base small enough at 29 inches to negotiate tight indoor spaces. The seat height, removable arm rests, and choice of seat widths make it able to accommodate a wide range of users while providing secure support for those up to 500 pounds. Its comfortable seat is styled like a captain’s chair and comes with a headrest. The Osprey can roll along at nine miles an hour, has a range of up to 38 miles and can go for 17 hours between charges. Four pneumatic tires and suspension on the front and rear provide the user with a smoothly comfortable ride, and the safety package includes a rear-view mirror, turn signals, horn, and hand-operated electromagnetic brakes.  An optional arm rest carry bag is also available. The Osprey comes in metallic grey and may need some assembly.

Both the Pronto Air and Osprey are ideal for people living with neuromuscular or neurological conditions; conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis; and age-related mobility issues in order to give them the optimal degree of independence to ensure the highest possible quality of life.
