September is here and that means children of all ages are going back to school, bringing the sound of joy and laughter from the parents, um, I mean from children everywhere. Whether it is pre-K, grade school, middle school, high school, or college, students are given the opportunity to learn, be educated, and advance with knowledge going into their future. Educating a child with reading, writing and arithmetic are as important as the learning of social interaction with fellow students and teachers within the classroom, and no child should be left behind due to the lack of specialized classroom equipment. Learning is not a privilege for a few children, but a right for all of them, regardless of health or disability, and Rehabmart is proud to offer specialized school and classroom equipment to assist any child to accomplish and achieve his or her goals.

The following products are just a few examples of the types of classroom equipment and products offered by Rehabmart.

The TherAdapt Inclusion Modular Chair can be used for pre-school children up to college age students when standard classroom chairs do not provide the proper support and seating properties for mildly to moderately involved users. As a modular chair with adjustable height, angle and depth capabilities, this chair can be customized to fulfill the different needs of differently sized users. Extension leg tubes help make the chair legs more durable and more able to adapt to uneven floors. The flip-back armrests allow the user to easily complete lateral transfers into or out-from the chair when placed in the ‘up’ position, and when in the ‘down’ position, the chair arms provide comfortable arm pads and support to the user’s upper extremities when the user is sitting, or to assist them with a sit-to-stand transfer.

How many times have teachers or parents told children not to tip back on the chair? It doesn’t matter; kids are still going to press the limits of balance by tipping a four-legged chair back on the two back legs. With the Pediatric Learning Chair, students can now press the boundaries of balance without actually tipping over. This birch-wood chair, which comes in two sizes with working loads of 75 pounds for the small size and 175 pounds for the large size, allows students to tip to their hearts desire with the ‘safety-with-tipping’ rolling wheel on the rear legs. This safety design braces the increased weight of the chair as it is moved back and forth with an adventurous child sitting upon it, preventing a dangerous and painful backward fall.

A child can learn to read from many different sources, and one of them is with the Reading Time Communicator. Clip any book onto the Reading Time Communicator and record each page of text by speaking into the recorder and using the built-in, different color mini-gumball switches. Place a removable corresponding colored sticker (matching a gumball switch) to each of the six pages. The child will then press a switch that matches the colored sticker on the page to hear the recorded text of that page as he or she reads along. If the book has more than six pages, the story can be continued on the next level, up to four levels, or 24 recorded pages. After the child is finished with all of the levels, another book can be re-recorded over the previously stored information. The child can hear the parent’s or teacher’s voice as he or she reads along with the words on the page.

The Kaye Tilting Therapy Benches are great to use in homes, physical, occupational or speech therapy, and for school programs for children who may not need back support when sitting, but do require an adjustable firm seat so that the child’s feet can rest firmly on the floor. Made with stable, solid construction, the tilting therapy benches offer firm seating so the child can achieve maximum hand and arm movements for learning, play therapy and other daily living activities. With slotted legs offering quick and easy raising or lowering of the bench as well as tilting the seat surface, children can benefit by being able to place more weight squarely on their feet, aiding postural control which leads to improved hand and arm function.

School and learning should be available and as comfortable as possible for all children, at all levels of education. Not everybody learns at the same rate or at the same speed, and some children may need extra assistance with the act of learning. Simple tools such as chairs, desks, benches or electronic readers can offer advantages and joy to many children for many years to come. Learning is a right, not a privilege.
