Every parent struggles with taking the absolute best possible care of their child in every way. Bathing a child has long been a slippery slope, and many a parent have momentarily lost their unstable grip only to quickly grab their child's arm again right before they hit the water-all the while with mom's heart racing. Bathing a child with special needs is much more challenging because of their physical inability to stop themselves from falling or from fully supporting their own body weight combined with the slippery "hope you can hold on" part of bath time. And then there is the back breaking effort lifting the child in and out of the tub, and bending over to reach the bottom of the tub where the child rests to wash those precious parts.
Children should always feel safe, stable, and comfortable during tub time, thereby building their overall feeling of security and well-being. Bath time is important; not only because the child usually really enjoys it, but also because it provides tactile (sensory) stimulation. Studies have proven that fostering a child's exploration of their sense of touch triggers elevated brain activity, and water encourages relaxation. But the extra challenges of bathing a special needs child often deters the parent or caregiver from giving frequent real baths, which is unhygienic and can lead to infections. Parents who cannot afford to renovate their bathroom to accommodate the special needs of their child often resort to sponge baths.
